The Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services (PSES) is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as members of the Public Security Indigenous Advisory Committee (PSIAC) for up to a three-year term to advise the Ministry on matters pertaining to policing matters affecting Indigenous peoples within their communities.

The Committee brings together diverse Indigenous perspectives from different communities and organizations across Alberta with each member committed to engaging with the community(s) they represent on the topics discussed during committee meetings with the goal of developing a shared understanding between the diverse Indigenous communities and the Government of Alberta, and to establish ongoing dialogue about public safety and security initiatives and issues of mutual concern, related to policing.

Location
Meetings may be virtual or could be in-person in locations such as Edmonton or Calgary. Candidates should be available to travel throughout the province as required.
About the Agency

The PSIAC is an advisory group. It provides recommendations to assist in implementing plans to address matters concerning policing matters affecting Indigenous people within their communities.

Role Description

Members of the PSIAC will participate in ongoing dialogue regarding policing matters affecting Indigenous peoples within their communities. The PSIAC members will play a critical role in determining policy and program direction and assisting the Ministry in building long-term and meaningful relationships, fostering mutual understanding, and demonstrating commitment to aligning government processes with the evolving needs of Indigenous peoples across the province.

Skills and Experience Required

The applicant demonstrates an ability to think strategically about the opportunities and challenges facing the Indigenous peoples and to engage in short, medium and long-range planning to provide high-level guidance and direction. The candidate demonstrates competencies such as leadership/teamwork skills, strategic thinking/planning skills, or critical thinking/problem solving skills. The ideal candidates’ background includes leadership experience, well-developed dispute resolution, and decision-making skills obtained through experience.

Knowledge, expertise and professional experience in the following areas are preferred:

Strong cultural knowledge and an ability to coordinate activities with Indigenous communities.

Evidence of leadership experience and expertise.

Understanding of current and emerging issues in policing matters affecting Indigenous peoples within their communities within Alberta.

Sound judgment, analytical and facilitation skills, with a strong organizational capacity.

Demonstrated success in building and maintaining positive relationships.

Experience in matters related to public security, law enforcement, and Indigenous community engagement would be considered an asset.

Academic Background

Background and training in governance and Indigenous studies would be considered assets.

Assets

Experience with policing matters affecting Indigenous peoples within their communities, or ability to demonstrate knowledge or expertise in, board governance in the private, public, and/or volunteer/non-profit sector. This may and/or may not include experience serving on or working with a board.

Other

Final candidates will be asked to undergo a background check, disclosure, and conflict of interest screening. Please note, results from background checks may not impact a candidate’s involvement on the advisory group.

Remuneration and Time Commitment

The member of PSIAC is a part-time position. Meetings will be held monthly throughout the year.

All members will be appointed through Ministerial Order. Appointments are for a specified term, and reappointments may be possible.

Candidates should be available to travel throughout the province as required. Meetings may be virtual or could be in-person in locations such as Edmonton or Calgary.

Remuneration will be provided to members as per Appendix 3, Schedule 1, Part B of the Committee Remuneration Order (O.C. 466/2007).

A member of a committee, other than the chairman, shall be paid:

(a) $115 for up to and including four hours in any day, or

(b) $191 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day, or

(c) $306 for over eight hours in any day, spent on the business of the committee.

The chairman or person acting as the chairman of a committee shall be paid:

(a) $169 for up to and including four hours in any day, or

(b) $290 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day, or

(c) $454 for over eight hours in any day, spent on the business of the committee.

Travel expenses will be paid in accordance with the Government of Alberta’s Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Policy: 2025 Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Policy - effective July 3, 2025
