The Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a physician member of the Out-Of-Country Health Services Committee.

About the Agency
  • The committee reviews, evaluates and makes funding decisions on applications made by physicians or dentists on behalf of Albertan residents seeking approval for the payment of expenses for insured health services received outside of Canada.
  • The committee consists of four physician members and a non-voting chair who is an employee of the department of Primary and Preventative Health Services. The committee was established under the Out-of-Country Health Services Regulation.
Role Description

Physician members review and evaluate applications and make funding decisions regarding the payment of expenses for health services incurred outside of Canada.

Appointment terms of a physician member may be up to three years and the member may be eligible for reappointment to a maximum of 12 consecutive years in accordance with Alberta Public Agencies Governance Act (APAGA).

Skills and Experience Required

Applicants must be physicians who are regulated members in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Physicians in active practice are preferred.

Competencies include, but are not limited to:

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Well-developed critical thinking and analytical skills
  • Ability to concisely synthesize information from various sources
  • Ability to understand and apply legislation
  • Awareness and knowledge of health services available in Alberta and the province’s health care environment.

This posting may be used to fill both existing and future physician member vacancies for public entities reporting to Primary and Preventative Health Services.

The following individuals will NOT be considered for appointment as committee members:

  • an employee of Alberta Primary and Preventative Health Services, Assisted Living and Social Services, Hospital and Surgical Health Services and Mental Health and Addiction; and
  • individuals whose appointment would result in an actual or perceived conflict of interest that cannot be managed.
Remuneration and Time Commitment
  • This is not a salaried position. In accordance with section 4(5)(a) of the Out-of-Country Health Services Regulation, physician members of the committee are entitled to $525 for up to and including four hours in any day and $131 for each additional hour or part of an hour in the day spent on the business of the committee.
  • Committee members may also be reimbursed for reasonable expenses necessarily incurred in the course of performing their duties as committee members in accordance with the Public Service Relocation and Employment Expenses Regulation and the Government of Alberta’s Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expense Policy.
  • Meetings are scheduled every six weeks virtually or held in Edmonton. Physician members are expected to review all applications prior to each scheduled meeting and be prepared to attend meetings in person to discuss the applications and their findings.
  • The total time commitment is approximately eight hours every six weeks with the occasional urgent meeting that requires an average of four hours via teleconference.
