The Minister of Assisted Living and Social Services (ALSS) is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a Public Member of the Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities (PCSPD).

Location
Meetings are virtual and in-person. In person meetings are based out of Edmonton and Calgary.
About the Agency

The Government of Alberta (GoA) is committed to engaging Albertans on how provincial policies and programs can best meet their needs and creates advisory boards as one ongoing method to hear from citizens. The Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities (Council) is one of these boards.

  • Created under the Premier’s Council on the Status of Persons with Disabilities Act (1988), the Council is an advisory agency accountable to the Premier through the Minister of ALSS.
  • Council is responsible for providing advice regarding equal opportunities for persons with disabilities to engage in the life of the province.
  • The Council will act strategically to ensure that a disability perspective is provided to help inform or revise key government policies and/or programs.
  • The Council is established solely for the purpose of providing advice to the GoA, with no authority over budget or staff.
  • The board has a total of 15 appointments. This consists of one Chair, one Vice-Chair, up to two MLAs, and 11 additional members.
    Role Description

    Accountabilities of the role:

    • Public Member:
      • Engage with their communities and networks to develop an understanding of issues that impact people with disabilities in Alberta and bring emerging issues or trends to the attention of the council.
      • Three year appointment.
    Skills and Experience Required

    As Public Member, you will demonstrate the following:

    • Be a person with a disability, have a family member with a disability, or have a strong connection to or have worked within the disability community.
    • Proven leadership skills at the community or provincial level.
    • Demonstrated ability to think strategically as well as to inspire and motivate others.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships.
    • Strong connections at the local level to the disability community, stakeholders, and service agencies.
    • The ability to clearly convey and receive messages that meet the needs of diverse groups.
    • Demonstrated success achieving results and maintaining flexibility in adapting to changes in the external environment.
    • Expertise in identifying issues and assessing options and implications before providing advice.
    • Experience working within a council or board model structure, or working cooperatively and productively within a in a diverse team environment where collaboration and cohesive team work are essential.
    • Proven competency with Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, videoconferencing tools and systems, email and internet. Proficiency with any adaptive software and/or devices needed for computer access or document creation.
    • Lived experience as, and/or experience working with person(s) with disabilities, immigrant(s), individual(s) experiencing poverty, youth, and Indigenous (person) communities.
    • Knowledge or experience within the Arts and Culture sector is as asset.

    Remuneration and Time Commitment
    • This is a volunteer position. Council members may receive remuneration for time spent on Council business.
    • Remuneration rates for Council members are: $164 for up to and including four hours, or $290 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day, or $427 for over eight hours in any day, spent on the business of the committee.
    • Based on Part A of the Committee Remuneration Order (O.C. 466/2007).
    • Council members may be reimbursed for reasonable expenses necessarily incurred while performing their duties in accordance with the Government of Alberta's Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expense Policy.
    • Time commitment varies. Council meets in person at least twice a year in Calgary or Edmonton; these meetings are typically two days in length. Other meetings are held by videoconference and are typically held during weekday office hours.
    • Excluding the two-day meetings, the time commitment is approximately 10 to 15 hours per month averaged over a 12-month period.
