Role Required

The Minister of Justice is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as either a public member or a legal member of the Alberta Judicial Nominating Committee.

About the Agency

The Committee provides advice and guidance to the Minister regarding recommendations from a list of qualified candidates provided by the Judicial Council for judicial and justices of the peace appointments for the Alberta Court of Justice. Candidates who are approved by the Committee are placed on an Appointment Eligibility List. The Minister selects individuals for appointment to the Alberta Court of Justice from the Appointment Eligibility List.

Role Description

The Committee consists of up to eleven members, as follows: a Chair appointed by the Minister; the Chief Justice of the Alberta Court of Justice, or designate; the President of the Law Society, or designate; the President of the Alberta Section of the Canadian Bar Association, or designate; and up to seven additional members appointed by the Minister which may be legal members and/or public members. Maintaining a balance of lawyers and public members is ideal.

The Committee is responsible for the governance of and overseeing the management of the Committee’s business and affairs. The Committee must make all reasonable efforts to ensure that the advice provided to the Minister is evidence-based.

Skills and Experience Required
  • Significant experience with community-based organizations outside of board experience will be considered a substantial asset.
  • All members should possess strong listening and communication skills; an ability and willingness to develop consensus; courtesy and professionalism; effective interview skills and telephone consultation skills; and good judgment and assessment of character.
  • Previous experience on a government board, commission, or community committee is an asset.
  • Previous board or leadership experience will be considered an asset.
  • A post-secondary education is preferred.
  • Legal members are required to have a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) and be an active member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
  • Successful candidates must not be current judicial applicants. Lawyers who sit as members of the Committee cannot apply to be considered for an Alberta Court of Justice or Justice of the Peace appointment for two years following the expiry of their appointment term or their resignation from the Committee.
  • Successful candidates will be residents of Alberta. Final candidates will be asked to undergo a security screening.
Remuneration and Time Commitment

The Committee members are remunerated by honorarium for their time spent conducting Committee business. Expenses are reimbursed in accordance with the Government of Alberta’s Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expense Policy. Schedule 1, Part A of the Committee Remuneration Order (OC 466/2007) establishes the following rates of remuneration payable to the members:

A member of a committee, other than the chair, shall be paid:

(a) $164 for up to and including four hours in any day, or

(b) $290 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day, or

(c) $427 for over eight hours in any day, spent on the business of the Committee. Honoraria rates are subject to review. Members should be available approximately eight to 21 days per year for Committee activities plus preparation time. The Committee meets at least six times each year.
