Public members of the APEGA and ASET Joint Appeal Board, Joint Board of Examiners, Joint Discipline Committee, Joint Investigative Committee, Joint Practice Review Board, and Joint Professionals Technologists Regulations Committee.
Your application will be considered for appointment as a public member to any one of the six (6) Joint Boards or Committees.
APEGA regulates the practices of engineering and geoscience in Alberta on behalf of the Government of Alberta through the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act. APEGA’s main regulatory function is licensing individuals and companies that want to practise engineering and geoscience in Alberta. Applicants and companies that meet APEGA’s standards for ethical, professional and technical competency earn the right to practice and use reserved titles and designations.
ASET benefits the public and the profession by being the premier regulator, service provider, and promoter of safe, high quality professional technology practice. ASET’s vision is to be recognized and respected as the innovative self-regulating professional body defining the latest scope and standards of practice for a dynamic and engaged community of technology professionals.
A Professional Technologist designation is jointly regulated by APEGA and ASET and demonstrates that an ASET Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) has met strict Alberta criteria for certification and an independent restricted scope of practice in their field. Under the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act, Professional Technologist’s who become members of ASET are accountable for public safety under the law.
As self-regulating professional associations, APEGA and ASET ensure public safety with a responsibility to guarantee the qualifications of those holding APEGA and ASET titles and protect against title misuse, and the ability to exercise disciplinary and legal action to ensure competence of APEGA and ASET members.
Public members appointed to self-regulating professional organizations are a key mechanism that the Government of Alberta uses to ensure the accountability of self-regulating professional organizations. Public members are appointed to:
- ensure professional governance activities are conducted in a manner that protects and serves the public interest;
- develop policies in accordance with legislation;
- act fairly and in the public interest;
- adhere to statutory requirements; and
- develop and foster professional standards.
Public members must:
- contribute an independent and objective perspective that is external to that of registered members of the profession;
- ensure views of the general public are considered in the decisions being made by the governing body
- prepare for, attend, and participate in meetings;
- participate fully in the decisions being made during the disciplinary processes;
- provide input in disciplinary decision making and assist in preparing written disciplinary decisions.
Public members are appointed by the Minister, from one or more nominees put forward by the APEGA and ASET Councils. Public members are typically appointed for a term of up to three years and may be eligible for reappointment.
Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and a permanent resident of Alberta.
Successful applicants may demonstrate the following competencies and skills:
- Relevant Professional/Volunteer Experience – The candidate has professional, volunteer and/or non-profit experience that is relevant and valuable to a board or committee of a public agency.
- Specialized Contextual Knowledge – The candidate has an understanding of the role of a public member and how that role is unique within the context of self-regulating professional organizations. Knowledge or experience related to investigative processes, regulatory discipline processes or decision making is an asset.
- Personal Effectiveness Skills – The candidate has personal skills or attributes that serve them to be an effective public member and is able to provide leadership and sound, responsible perspective on behalf of the Government of Alberta and Albertans.

The following are NOT eligible to be appointed as public members:
- A person who is a regulated member of APEGA or ASET.
- A person who is eligible to receive a designation from APEGA or ASET.
The Government of Alberta is committed to offering qualified Albertans the opportunity to serve as public members on Alberta’s Professional Regulatory Organizations. To ensure that Albertans are well-represented on governing bodies, we invite candidates from diverse backgrounds who embody a range of knowledge, skills, occupations, expertise, perspective, and personal characteristics such as gender, age, ethnicity, cultural heritage, place of residence, socio-economic status, and/or sexual orientation.
Members of the Joint Board of Examiners consider applications for registration as a P.Tech.(Eng.) or P.Tech.(Geo) member. The Joint Board of Examiners shall meet as necessary to consider matters of policy, significant changes to procedures or any matters referred to it by any member of the Joint Boards or the Councils. The Board typically meets five to six times annually to review applications and address policy and procedural matters. Meetings are typically five to six hours in duration and are held during business hours at the ASET office or teleconference.
The Joint Investigative Committee meets as necessary to effectively investigate the complaints forwarded to the Committee. Typically, three to four complaints are received each year. For each complaint, multiple meetings may be required (via teleconference or at the ASET office) and take place during business hours.
The Joint Discipline Committee meets as needed to conduct discipline hearings, including advance individual review of relevant documentation and physical conduct of the hearings. Typically, three to four complaints are received each year. Meetings take place during business hours and may either be held via teleconference or at the ASET office. Hearings shall be held either in person or video conference unless otherwise agreed by all parties.
Members of the Joint Appeal Board will meet as necessary to rule on appeals, matters of policy and significant changes to procedures or any matters referred to it by the Joint Board of Examiners, Joint Practice Review Board, Joint Investigative Committee and Joint Discipline Committee. Typically, three to four appeal requests are received each year. Hearings are typically one day in duration and are held at the ASET office during business hours. Hearings shall be held either in person or video conference unless otherwise agreed by all parties.
Members of the Joint Practice Review Board meet as necessary to rule on standards of competence of members, matters of policy and significant changes to procedures or any matters referred to it by the Councils, Joint Board of Examiners or the Joint Discipline Committee.The Board meets a minimum of twice per year with at least one in-person meeting. Meetings are typically a half day in duration and are held at the ASET office or teleconference during business hours.
Members of the Joint Professional Technologist Regulations Committee meet as necessary to review and make recommendations to the APEGA and ASET Councils regarding the Professional Technologists Regulation.
The ASET Office is located in Edmonton. Candidates should be available to travel to Edmonton or throughout Alberta as required.
Volunteers receive full training to support their work on the board or committee.
Public members are considered volunteers and receive a small stipend in accordance with Schedule 1, Part A of the Committee Remuneration Order. Order in Council 466/2007, Schedule 1 (Section 1 and 3) effective April 1, 2009 in recognition of their volunteer efforts. Rates are as follows:
A member of a committee, shall be paid:
a) $164 for up to and including four hours in any day, or
b) $290 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day, or
c) $427for over eight hours in any day, spent on the business of the committee.
Honoraria is subject to review. The appointed public members of a committee are entitled to be paid travelling and living expenses in accordance with the Subsistence and Travel Allowance Regulation made by Ministerial Order 1/98, as amended, or any order made in substitution therefor, as though they were employees of the government.
