The Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services (SCSS) is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a public member of the Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Society (PCCCS).
The Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Society is an advisory agency comprised of civil society leaders who have expertise in specific areas such as the delivery of social services, social entrepreneurship, fundraising, philanthropy, and community development. The Council engages civil society leaders and advises government on how civil society organizations can be empowered to solve some of Alberta’s most pressing social issues. Civil society includes formally established non-profit/voluntary organizations (including registered charities), various informal groups or movements pursuing shared interests or values and private-sector organizations and individuals pursuing social good. PCCCS is accountable to the Premier through the Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services.
The Minister of SCSS appoints members, a Chair and Vice-Chair for terms up to three years, with possibility of re-appointment to a maximum of six years of continuous service. The PCCCS can have up to 15 members.
The Chair provides leadership to PCCCS Members and is responsible for the effective implementation of the PCCCS mandate. The Vice-Chair is accountable to and supports the Chair.
- Members are accountable to the Chair and are required to:
- Engage with their networks to bring forward informed input on issues that may impact the civil society sector in Alberta.
- Provide input to the ongoing work of the PCCCS.
- Participate in orientation, training and meetings of the PCCCS.
As Members, you will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of specific social challenges in Alberta (i.e., opioid crisis, food insecurity, homelessness, violence against women, supports for at-risk youth, newcomers or seniors, community inclusion, etc.).
- Awareness of government/public policy related to the design and delivery of social services, and the roles of civil society in addressing these issues.
- Knowledge of fundraising, philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, and emerging opportunities related to social finance.
- Experience with and/or knowledge of diverse cultural communities (e.g., ethno-cultural, LGBTQ+, etc.) and demonstrated intercultural competence communicating with diverse groups.
- Experience with or knowledge of Indigenous communities and an appreciation for Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing. This may include being a member of First Nation, Métis, or Inuit communities.
- Understanding of effective governance practices, particularly in the non-profit/voluntary sector, along with strong leadership and team-building skills.
- Experience in cross-sector collaboration and stakeholder engagement.
- Strategic thinking/planning and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent interpersonal/communication skills and the ability to develop effective networks and partnerships.
Strong preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate knowledge of Alberta’s economy and the Council's composition, governance structures and stakeholders. As this council serves people throughout Alberta, geographical perspectives will also be considered.

Council members receive compensation and reimbursement for travel and expenses for time spent on PCCCS business in accordance with government-wide policies.
The remuneration rate is specified in Part A of the Committee Remuneration Order (O.C. 466/2007).
Remuneration rates for Public Members:
- $164 for up to and including four hours in any day, or
- $290 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day, or
- $427 for over eight hours in any day, spent on the business of the Council.
PCCCS Members may be reimbursed for reasonable expenses necessarily incurred in the course of performing their duties in accordance with the Government of Alberta's Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expense Policy.
The PCCCS meets up to 10 times/year. For peak periods, Council members may be asked to commit up to 1-2 days/month, including meetings, engagement sessions and any required training.
