The Minister of Municipal Affairs is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as the Ministerial appointee to the Board of Directors of the Alberta Elevating Devices and Amusement Rides Safety Association (AEDARSA).
AEDARSA is a delegated administrative organization that administers specified services pertaining to elevating devices, amusement rides, and passenger ropeways (“including ski lifts”) pursuant to the Administration Agreement between the Government of Alberta and AEDARSA, under Schedule 10 of the Government Organization Act.
AEDARSA works closely with Municipal Affairs and the Safety Codes Council of Alberta to administer and enforce public safety laws and is tasked with the following:
- Providing information and resources to those installing elevating devices, amusement rides, and passenger ropeways.
- Reviewing all plans to ensure they meet safety requirements and codes.
- Conducting inspections/granting acceptance of all newly installed or renovated elevating devices, amusement rides, and passenger ropeways in Alberta.
- Investigating all accidents and making recommendations for changes where required.
- Managing and maintaining permanent records related to all delegated functions and devices.
- Providing technical advice and education on applicable codes and standards.
- Conducting all in-service inspections on elevating devices, amusement rides, and passenger ropeways in Alberta.
AEDARSA is governed by an eight-person Board of Directors including one member appointed by the Minister of Municipal Affairs. Directors represent a cross-section of all industrial sectors regulated by AEDARSA. The Board of Directors provides guidance and direction to AEDARSA on its activities and programs by developing policies that will ensure good governance, build effective stakeholder relationships, and help meet the organization’s goals. Directors meet regularly to review all aspects of AEDARSA business.
Appointed by the Minister of Municipal Affairs, this member represents the interests of Albertans. In addition to serving on AEDARSA’s Board, you will be responsible for providing updates and reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Technical and Corporate Services Division of Municipal Affairs.
The Ministerial appointee is appointed for a term not to exceed two years and may be reappointed for further terms.

As a Board member, you will have an opportunity to contribute to the safety codes system in Alberta. You will learn about elevating devices and amusement ride safety across the province and will help to promote safe communities and workplaces.
You should have a strong interest in supporting and improving public safety. Ideally, you will hold a senior position with leadership and strategic planning experience, and be familiar with the elevating devices and amusement rides industry.
Previous experience working with a board of directors, and experience with finance and/or human resources management, is a definite asset.
Board positions are voluntary. Directors are entitled to receive an honorarium or remuneration in the course of their duties as directors, as authorized by the board.
Subject to any policies established by the board from time to time, directors are reimbursed their travelling and living expenses incurred while on the business of the board, as well as any other disbursements expended in the course of performing their duties as directors.
Meetings of the board are held as often as the affairs of the board require. Meetings of the board may be held anywhere authorized by the board. Board member time requirements and responsibilities include 5-7 days (annually) and attendance at quarterly meetings in Calgary or Edmonton, participation in committees, activities and other functions.
