Role Required

The Board of Directors of the Invest Alberta Corporation (Invest Alberta) in conjunction with the Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation, is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as Directors for this provincial agency that leads an aggressive worldwide campaign to attract job-creating investment to the province.

Role Description

The Board of Directors plays an important role in providing strategic guidance and oversight to Invest Alberta to enable the Corporation to deliver on its mandate to attract high-value, high-impact investments to the province. In their role, Board Members regularly review and set the strategic direction for the organization and ensure management is accountable for completing agreed upon strategic initiatives.

Accountable to the Minister of Jobs, Economy and Innovation, the Board of Directors ensures that Invest Alberta acts within its mandate and operates in a manner that is consistent with the Alberta Investment Attraction Act, the Alberta Public Agencies Governance Act (APAGA), other applicable legislation and policies, and corporate governance principles.

Directors are appointed to a fixed term, with a potential for reappointments, subject to a maximum of 10 consecutive years of service.

Skills and Experience Required

For this recruitment, the agency is particularly interested in candidates with knowledge, expertise and professional experience in the following areas:

    • Experience as a senior business leader in a priority financial market
    • Small business
    • Municipal governance
    • Agricultural technology
    • International professional experience
  • Invest Alberta’s Board of Directors is also seeking individuals who have represented directly, or indirectly, Indigenous, youth and rural groups.

Core competencies required for Invest Alberta Directors include:

  • Relevant professional experience in one or more of the following:
      • Marketing and communications
      • International investment and trade
      • Public sector
      • Finance/ Accounting
      • Risk Management
  • Industry and sector knowledge in more of the following Invest Alberta priority and enabling sectors:
      • Energy and Cleantech
      • Petrochemicals
      • Agriculture 
      • Tourism 
      • Technology
      • Aviation and Logistics
      • Film and Media Production
  • Leadership and advisory experience (networking and relationship building, human resources and strategic planning).
  • Prior board experience with a for-profit entity, significant public agency/crown corporation, regulatory body or major organization with a governance or advisory board. An ICD.D designation or similar would be considered an asset.
  • A track record of exercising sound and consistent judgement and demonstrated expertise in managing complex issues with integrity and fairness.
  • A related post-secondary education (asset).
Remuneration and Time Commitment

Remuneration rates for Invest Alberta Board of Directors (other than the chair and vice-chair) are currently as follows and may be subject to review at any time:

  • An annual retainer (prorated), payable at the end of the fiscal year, of $10,000, plus $300 per meeting.
  • The Board Travel, Hosting and Expense Policy, which is a Schedule to Order in Council 243/2020, outlines reimbursement of expenses related to meetings for the Board.

Board Member appointments are made by Order in Council and are for a fixed term, with the potential for reappointment for additional terms. The time commitment is anticipated to be a full-day annual Board retreat, quarterly four-hour Board meetings; quarterly two-hour committee meetings; and ad hoc requests to meet with major investors and clients. Meetings will be held in person when safe to do so, and Directors may participate via virtual meetings or conference calls occasionally.
