Role Required

The Minister of Service Alberta is seeking applications from Albertans interested in serving as a public member for the Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board (AFSRB).

Location
The AFSRB office is located in Sherwood Park. Currently all board meetings are conducted virtually at this time during COVID-19.
About the Agency

The Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board (AFSRB) was established in December 1992 and is delegated with the responsibility for the regulation of the funeral industry under the Funeral Services Act. The Board consists of three public members and three industry members.

The AFSRB sets licensing standards and industry education requirements within Alberta. It also provides a complaint resolution process, conducts disciplinary hearings, and oversees the reporting of pre-paid funeral trust accounts.

Role Description

As a public member of the AFSRB Board, you will represent the public interest while working as part of a team to further the success of the Board and contribute to the overall leadership and strategic direction of the organization.

Board members contribute to:

  • establishing the policies that guide the Board in the fulfilment of its mission;
  • participating in the development of the business plan, goals and priorities of AFSRB;
  • overseeing the governance of AFSRB and job performance of the Executive Director of AFSRB;
  • setting licensing standards and education requirements for industry members;
  • approving the Board’s budget to ensure financial resources are allocated in a manner consistent with the Board’s business plan, goals, and priorities;
  • resolving complaints and disciplinary hearings of the industry members; and
  • overseeing pre-paid funeral trust account reporting.


There are two public member positions available, which will be appointed for three-year term. The terms may vary slightly to ensure adequate overlap.

Service Alberta recognizes the importance of reflecting the diversity of Alberta in the composition of boards, and welcomes candidates representing varied backgrounds, careers, and community leadership experience. If needed, training can be made available to support the successful candidate’s development.

Skills and Experience Required

The ideal candidates will have demonstrated the following:

  • Experience with administrative law, financial management, or regulatory board in another sector is required.
  • Experience with the following will be considered an asset:
    • A record of community involvement and/or volunteerism for charities, community support organizations, boards, councils or similar organizations;
    • Awareness and understanding of issues impacting the funeral industry;
    • Knowledge of regulatory principles, which may include interpreting and applying legislation, setting and enforcing standards of conduct, or an understanding of the legal dimensions of organizational issues;
    • Working with board structure and/or governance processes;
    • Proven critical thinking, problem solving, strategic decision-making, policy analysis, and conflict resolution skills;
    • Teamwork;
    • Written and verbal communication.

To be eligible for appointment a candidate must:

  • be a resident of Alberta;
  • not be licensed under the Funeral Services Act or the Crematories Regulation under the Cemeteries Act; and
  • not have any interest in a funeral services or cemetery business.
Remuneration and Time Commitment

Members of the Board receive honorariums for conducting board business and attending authorized committee meetings.

  • Meeting up to and including four hours in any day: $200
  • Meeting over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day: $400
  • Meeting over eight hours in any day or overnight: $500
  • Participation in a conference call: $50/call

Members of the Board are also entitled to be paid all necessary travel expenses. All Members are eligible for reimbursement of expenses in accordance with the AFSRB honorarium and expense policy.

There are approximately six to eight meetings per year, with the majority of those meetings occurring in Sherwood Park. All board meetings are conducted virtually at this time during COVID-19.
