Role Required

The Minister of Service Alberta is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a Ministerial Appointment/Appointee to the Debtors’ Assistance Board and the Money Mentors Board of Directors.

Location
The Board office is located in Calgary. Board meetings occur in Calgary and by video and telephone conference.
About the Agency

Money Mentors was incorporated in December 1996 and began operations in May 1997. Money Mentors administers the Orderly Payment of Debts Program under Part 10 of the Federal Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act in Alberta on behalf of the Debtors’ Assistance Board. Money Mentors is mandated to provide financial literacy materials and education to Albertans.

The Board composition includes representatives from the credit industry, insolvency professionals, educational institutions, and the public.

The Board consists of one member appointed by the Minister of Service Alberta, two members appointed to represent various participating associations, and up to nine members of the public.

Role Description

As a Ministerial Appointment/Appointee, the successful candidate will work as part of a team to represent the public interest to further the success of the board, and contribute to the overall leadership and strategic direction of the organization.

Board members contribute to:

  • Establish the policies that guide the Board to fulfill its mandate;
  • Participate in the development of the business plan, goals, and priorities of the Debtors’ Assistance Board and Money Mentors;
  • Oversee the governance of the Debtors’ Assistance Board and Money Mentors and the job performance of the Executive Director of Money Mentors; and
  • Approve the Board’s budget to ensure financial resources are allocated in a manner consistent with the board’s business plan, goals, and priorities.

One ministerial appointment position is available, which will be appointed for an initial term of up to three years. This position may be eligible for reappointment.

To be eligible for appointment a candidate must be a resident of Alberta and must not be a member of the credit granting industry.

Skills and Experience Required

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated the following:

  • Demonstrated background in community service, which may include volunteering or working for charities, community support organizations, boards, councils, or similar organizations.
  • Knowledge or expertise in board governance in the private, public, and/or volunteer/profit sector.
  • An understanding of the broader public policy context affecting the credit industry or insolvency is an asset.
  • Interest or awareness of personal finances, financial literacy, or financial empowerment is desirable.
  • Experience with the credit industry or financial management is also desirable but not necessary, as is a related professional accreditation.
  • Understanding of the importance of teamwork to the success of an organization and the ability to inspire, motivate, and offer direction and leadership to others.
  • Strategic thinking and planning regarding the opportunities and challenges facing the Debtors Assistance Board and Money Mentors, and the ability to engage in planning to provide high-level direction.
  • Written and verbal communication, including the ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy while bringing a public perspective to the Board.

Remuneration and Time Commitment

Members of the Debtors’ Assistance Board and the Money Mentors Board of Directors Board are reimbursed for approved expenses related to Board business. There is no remuneration for service.

The Debtors’ Assistance Board typically meets once annually and the Money Mentors Board of Directors meets three to four times annually, including video and phone meetings. Board members can choose to participate in committee work, which varies based on organizational needs.
