The Board of Directors of the Invest Alberta Corporation (IAC) is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for this new provincial agency that will lead an aggressive worldwide campaign to attract job-creating investment to the province.

Location
It is expected that the agency will be headquartered in Calgary and Edmonton with offices and staff in both locations.
About the Agency

The Government of Alberta is establishing a provincial agency to promote Alberta as an investment destination, generate leads in key sectors, cultivate investor and partner relationships, and provide tailored services to high-value and high-impact investors. The agency will help instill investor confidence and generate investment in Alberta’s primary sectors – energy, agriculture and tourism. Invest Alberta will also pursue investment opportunities for Alberta’s high-growth industries, such as technology, aviation and aerospace, and financial services. The Alberta International Office network will report into this agency and provide investment, trade and advocacy services to the province.

Role Description

Reporting to a board of directors, the CEO’s primary responsibilities include:

  • Setting up the investment agency, developing policies and procedures, staffing, developing an effective corporate structure, program delivery, and operational planning to deliver on the agency’s mandate;
  • Leading the management team in developing, implementing, and reporting on the investment agency;
  • Preparing, presenting, and executing a strategic plan, business plan, annual budget, and annual report to the Minister of Alberta Economic Development, Trade and Tourism;
  • Establishing and maintaining appropriate systems and resources (e.g., physical, human, fiscal) for general administration, information technology, financial management, control and accountability of the agency;
  • Ensuring the proper assessment, management, and mitigation of risks;
  • Leading the agency, including staff interactions with various government departments;
  • Coordinating strategies to grow investment in Alberta’s key and enabling sectors;
  • Expanding a commercial presence and recognition of Alberta in global investment markets;
  • Promoting the province as an attractive investment destination and articulating information on the province’s environment, social, and governance (ESG) performance;
  • Building successful networks and relationships within national and international financial and investment centres, through outreach and integrated strategies;
  • Overseeing the development and maintenance of effective marketing materials and corporate communications strategy;
  • Sharing information in a timely manner by ensuring the agency’s information management systems and information technology systems accommodate and enable the free and open exchange of information that is not commercially sensitive or subject to other access restrictions;
  • Ensuring the coordination of external communications with Government of Alberta communications staff and agency staff so that the proper planning, review, or collaboration can occur, as necessary;
  • Liaising with senior and elected government officials; and
  • Providing support to the agency’s Board of Directors to allow it to carry out its governance responsibilities.
Skills and Experience Required

The CEO has a record of achievement as a senior executive and should have the capability, diverse range of skills, and experience required to lead the organization. Relevant professional knowledge and experience includes:

  • Corporate Governance;
  • Strategic Planning;
  • Fiscal Management;
  • Enterprise Risk Management
  • Foreign Direct Investment;
  • Financial/Capital Markets, both domestic and international;
  • Business Development; and
  • Stakeholder Relations.

Additional requirements include:

  • Proven managerial abilities, including leadership and team building skills;
  • An ability to foster a culture of integrity, trust, and accountability within the agency;
  • An ability to communicate effectively to a broad range of audiences in varying circumstances,
  • A passion for promoting investment and economic development in all regions of Alberta;
  • A reputation for sound ethics and integrity;
  • A demonstrated respect for others;
  • An ability to work with and support a diverse Board as well as local, international and government stakeholders;
  • An ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful, politically sensitive, changing and uncertain environment;
  • Exceptional judgement and communication skills;
  • A demonstrated ability to identify and synthesize information from a variety of sources to develop and articulate a long-term vision and strategic plan for IAC and ensure its success; and
  • An ability to influence, inspire, and motivate others by providing direction or through collaboration, consensus building, and modelling to achieve desired outcomes.
