• Are you a socially conscious, energetic and dedicated physician with an interest in coverage for insured health services received outside of Canada? If so the Out-of-Country Health Services Committee (committee) might be the right fit for you.
• The Minister of Health is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a physician member (two positions available) of the Out-of-Country Health Services Committee. As a physician member of the committee you will have the opportunity to review, evaluate and make funding decisions on applications for out-of-country health services.
• The committee reviews, evaluates and makes funding decisions on applications made by physicians or dentists on behalf of Albertan residents seeking approval for the payment of expenses for insured health services received outside of Canada.
• The committee consists of four physician members and a non-voting chair who is an employee of Alberta health. The committee was established under the Out-of-Country Health Services Regulation.
• Physician members review, evaluate and make funding decisions on applications for payment of expenses for health services incurred outside of the country.
• Appointment terms of a physician member may be up to three years and the member may be eligible for reappointment to a maximum of 12 consecutive years in accordance with Alberta Public Agencies Governance Act (APEGA).
Applicants must be a physician who is a regulated member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, and who holds a practice permit that is not under suspension and has no conditions affecting their ability to serve on the committee.

• Superior verbal and written communication skills
• Well-developed critical thinking and analytical skills
• Ability to concisely synthesize information from various sources
• Ability to understand and apply legislation
• Awareness and knowledge of health services available in Alberta and the province’s health care environment

• This is not a salaried position. Physician members of the committee are entitled to $525 for up to and including four hours in any day and $131 for each additional hour or part of an hour in the day spent on the business of the committee in accordance with section 4(5)(a) of the regulation.
• Committee members may also be reimbursed for reasonable expenses necessarily incurred in the course of performing their duties as committee members in accordance with the Public Service Relocation and Employment Expenses Regulation and the Government of Alberta’s Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expense Policy.
• Meetings are scheduled every six weeks and held in Edmonton. Physician members are expected to review all applications prior to each scheduled meeting and be prepared to attend meetings in person to discuss the applications and their findings.
• The total time commitment is approximately eight hours every six weeks with the occasional urgent meeting that requires an average of four hours via teleconference.
Applicants must be a physician who is a regulated member of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, holding a practice permit issued under the Health Professions Act, and are not under suspension. Physicians in active practice are preferred.
The following will NOT be considered for appointment as committee members:
• Employees of Alberta Health;
• Individuals whose appointment would result in an actual or perceived conflict of interest; and
• Individuals who are not registered members in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.
