Workers' Compensation Board
Competition #: 587
Ministry : Labour
Opening Date : 2018/07/27
closing Date : 2018/08/21
Role : Board Member
It is recognized in Alberta as a fundamental principle and as a matter of public policy that all persons are equal. Diversity and inclusion are valued and supported on the boards of Alberta's public agencies.
The Minister of Labour is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a board member of Workers' Compensation Board (WCB). We are inviting applications to fill three vacancies.
(1) Director representative of the interests of Workers
(1) Director representative of the interests of Employers
(1) Director representative of the interests of General Public
Through an Act of the Legislature, the Workers' Compensation Act (WCA), the WCB-Alberta has overall responsibility for the administration of the workers' compensation services to the workers and employers of the province. The WCB-Alberta works with its community partners to significantly and measurably reduce the impact of workplace illness and injury on Albertans.
The Board of Directors plays an important role in ensuring WCB-Alberta’s accountability. The board is responsible and accountable to the Minister of Labour as defined in the Workers’ Compensation Act (WCA) and Corporate Governance Policy. In their governance role, members regularly review the strategic direction for the organization. Using their diverse areas of expertise, the Board of Directors ensures WCB-Alberta remains true to its mandate and that the health of the system is protected for the long term. The Board of Directors shall operate in a manner consistent with the WCA and corporate governance principles.
Although Board members are representative of the interests of workers, employers and the general public, it is expected that, consistent with their fiduciary role, they set aside any allegiances to a particular group and strive to maintain the welfare, credibility and integrity of the workers’ compensation system at all times.
The Board of Directors of WCB-Alberta is representative of the overall diversity of Alberta. Ideal candidates will bring a broad range of relevant experience, reflect the diversity of Albertans, and possess a demonstrated ability to make a significant contribution at the Board of Directors’ level across a wide variety of business, labour, financial and public policy issues. We seek Directors who understand and demonstrate commitment to the WCB-Alberta's Governance model and previous board experience is an asset.
The Board of Directors meets at least six times per year and board committees meet between three to four times in the year. Each board member sits on at least one committee. Board and committee meetings are held in the Edmonton office.
The remuneration payable is under Appendix 3, Schedule 1, Part A, of the Committee Remuneration Order (O.C. 466/2007). Members are reimbursed for allowable expenses as outlined in the WCB’s Expense Guideline. Current remuneration rates:
(a) $164 for up to and including four hours in any day, or
(b) $290 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day, or
(c) $427 for over eight hours in any day,
The schedule further allows the Minister to increase the rates payable to a maximum of double the amounts set out above where deemed appropriate. Given the level of commitment required, WCB board members are remunerated at the maximum rate. This practice has been in place, with Ministerial approval, since 1990.
