Role Required

The Minister of Justice and Solicitor General is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a public member of the Provincial Court Nominating Committee.

About the Agency

The Provincial Court Nominating Committee (Committee) is an advisory committee created under section 7 of the Government Organization Act. The Committee makes recommendations from a list of qualified candidates provided by the Alberta Judicial Council for Provincial Court Judges. Candidates who are approved by the Committee are placed on an Appointment Eligibility List for a period of three years from the date of approval. The Minister selects individuals for appointment to the Provincial Court of Alberta from the Appointment Eligibility List.

Role Description

According to the Terms of Reference, the Committee shall consist of a Chair appointed by the Minister, the Chief Judge of the Provincial Court, the President of the Law Society, the President of the Alberta Section of the Canadian Bar Association, or any of their designates, as well as up to seven additional members appointed by the Minister. Maintaining a balance of lawyers and public members is ideal. The ratio of six lawyers and four public members is the desired complement.

The Committee is responsible for the governance of and overseeing the management of the Committee’s business and affairs. The Committee must make all reasonable efforts to ensure that the advice provided to the Minister is evidence-based.

Skills and Experience Required
  • All members should possess strong listening and communication skills; ability and willingness to develop consensus; courtesy and professionalism; effective interview skills and telephone consultation skills; and good judgment and assessment of character. Previous experience on a government board, commission, or community committee is an asset.
  • Previous board or leadership experience will be considered an asset.
  • A post-secondary education is preferred.
  • Equivalencies for the above will be considered.

Successful candidates will be residents of Alberta. Final candidates will be asked to undergo a security screening.

Remuneration and Time Commitment

The Committee members are remunerated by honorarium for their time spent conducting Committee business. Expenses are reimbursed in accordance to the Government of Alberta’s Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expense Directive. Schedule 1, Part A of the Committee Remuneration Order (OC 466/2007) establishes the following rates of remuneration payable to the members of the PCNC:

A member of a committee, other than the chair, shall be paid:

  • $164 for up to and including four hours in any day, or                   
  • $290 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day, or                       
  • $427 for over eight hours in any day, spent on the business of the Committee.

Honorarium is subject to review. Members should be available approximately six days per year for Committee activities plus preparation time. The Committee meets at least three times each year. Meetings are held in-person in Edmonton and Calgary.
