The Minister of Economic Development and Trade is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a public member of the Advisory Council on Alberta Ukraine Relations (ACAUR). ACAUR is seeking two public members with directly related experience in the area of Alberta-Ukraine relations.
The Advisory Council on Alberta-Ukraine Relations (ACAUR) was established on November 20, 2000 and serves as an advisory body to the Minister of Economic Development and Trade. Council members provide strategic advice and recommendations on measures to better understand and manage the challenges and opportunities related to Alberta-Ukraine relations, and to enhance working relationships with Alberta’s Ukrainian community.
There are 345,000 Albertans of Ukrainian descent. This is the largest population of Ukrainian-Canadians in western Canada. The purpose of the ACAUR is to
- serve as a two-way information resource to Alberta’s Ukrainian community and the Government of Alberta (GoA) on Alberta-Ukraine activities; and
-
Identify and promote opportunities to strengthen and further cooperation between the governments of Ukraine and Alberta and foster a better understanding of Ukraine-related matters by other provinces, territories and the federal Government of Canada.
The main role of ACAUR members is to provide advice to the Minister of EDT on opportunities to further Alberta-Ukraine relations, including:
- Trade opportunities between Albertan and Ukrainian businesses; particularly in the following sectors: agriculture, education, health, energy, justice, immigration, the arts and humanitarian assistance programs.
- Alberta government programs, projects or policies related to Ukraine;
- Activities and conferences involving Albertan and Ukrainian businesses, professionals, cultural, arts and educational representatives and/or government officials, including Ukrainian-Canadian Heritage Day;
- Opportunities to share Alberta expertise to assist Ukraine’s national and subnational governments in developing and implementing transitional and long-term governance and economic reforms, where appropriate;
- Upcoming visits to Alberta or Canada by Government of Ukraine representatives.
Appointment term is up to three years, with the potential of re-appointment for additional years based on satisfactory performance. Members may be re-appointed up to a maximum of six consecutive years.
Ideal candidates will have related experience in the area of Alberta-Ukraine relations; a passion for Ukrainian language, culture and history; and involvement with Alberta’s Ukrainian community.
Knowledge and experience in business/finance and/or energy, and an understanding of particular trends, challenges and opportunities, or unique dynamics within these sectors is required.
Knowledge and experience in K-12 education, and an understanding of particular trends, challenges and opportunities, or unique dynamics within this sector is considered an asset.
ACAUR members are not provided any remuneration for their role. All eligible and approved travel and accommodation expenses incurred by members in performing the advisory council’s business are reimbursed.
The advisory council meets at least twice per year, with one of those meetings in September. The Chair of the ACAUR will set the schedule for its meetings. Quorum is met with 50 per cent plus one of the members, one of whom must be the Chair.
The Chair reports to the Minister of EDT and ensures that meeting minutes are recorded and communicated in a concise, written format to the Minister, as appropriate, after each meeting.
