The Minister of Advanced Education is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a public member of The Board of Governors of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT).
NAIT is a public, board governed technical institute operating as a Polytechnic Institution under the authority of the Post-secondary Learning Act of Alberta. As a Polytechnic Institution, NAIT fulfills its role and mandate by offering experiential and hands-on technology-based educational programs, and engages in industry-driven applied research designed to meet the needs of Alberta, students, and industry. NAIT is committed to accessibility, inclusion, diversification innovation, and responsiveness through collaboration within the Campus Alberta system, and uses new approaches and new technology to deliver educational programs to facilitate collaboration.
Board and Committee Structure
The Board consists of 12 public members, one of whom is designated as Chair, as well as five members nominated or elected to represent various associations of the institution. The President is also a member of the Board by virtue of that position. Committees established by the Board include: Academic Council, Audit, Campus Development, External Relations, Finance, Governance, and Human Resources.
Role of the Public Member
The public member shares with other members of the Board the responsibilities of governing the institute; formulating policies enabling the Board to make responsible decisions on fiscal and academic matters; establishing the purpose and vision of NAIT, and has a commitment to the academic, financial and social well-being of the institution and to adult learning generally.
The successful applicant will demonstrate the following competencies and skills:
• Leadership - experience inspiring and influencing others, as well as experience in key areas such as strategic planning and risk management.
• Relationship building and community partnerships - experience making strong community connections with diverse stakeholder groups and experience building consensus and partnerships.
• Governance - experience on or with board structures and policy governance models, and/or current or previous board or committee experience. A demonstrated understanding of the distinct roles of the Board and management.
• Post-secondary Education/Delivery of Education - experience working with and/or influencing learning and innovation systems. Experience supporting education systems.
Preferred applicants may also demonstrate:
Background and experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Financial literacy, including experience with budget, audit and the ability to read and assess financial statements. Experience with public sector accounting and/or a designation in a related field considered an asset;
- Information technology management, including experience with the design, development, implementation, support and/or management of information technology;
- Human resources, including understanding of and experience with labour relations and negotiations;
- Skilled trades background;
- Real estate and/or real estate development;
- Experience in or understanding of science and technology, trades, health and/or business;
- Experience working with Indigenous peoples/communities
Familiarity with Calgary and/or Northern Alberta is also preferred.
Credential and experience verification may be conducted.
The public member is appointed for a term of up to three years and may be eligible for reappointment for a second term of up to three years. The Board meets every other month, unless required, and alternates public meetings, learning workshops and an annual retreat. The public member can expect a significant time commitment to meet the demands of this role.
There is no honorarium available with this opportunity. Members are reimbursed for allowable expenses as per the Board’s Bylaws.
Meetings are held in Edmonton, Alberta.
