The Minister of Advanced Education is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a public membersof the Board of Keyano College.

About the Agency

Keyano College is a public, board-governed college operating as a Comprehensive Community Institution under the authority of the Post-secondary Learning Act of Alberta. Keyano College, now in its 50th year, offers a diverse program mix including certificates, diplomas, university transfer, apprenticeship, academic upgrading, and through collaboration with other post-secondary institutions, degree completion options. Keyano College’s comprehensive program offerings include arts, health, engineering technologies, human services, humanities, trades, transportation, heavy equipment operations, and industrial training. Through innovative program delivery options such as the Heavy Equipment Mobile Simulators, Keyano is able to offer training in remote northern communities, providing students the opportunity to avail of economically viable post-secondary training while remaining in their home communities.

Board and Committee Structure

The Board consists of eight public members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, one of whom is designated as chair, as well as three members nominated or elected to represent various associations of the institution. The President is also a member of the Board by virtue of their position. Committees established for the Board include: Governance & Human Resources, Campus Development, and Finance and Audit.

Role Description

Role of the Public Member

The public member shares with other members of the Board the responsibilities of governing the college; formulating policies enabling the Board to make responsible decisions on fiscal and academic matters; establishing the purpose and vision of the college and has a commitment to the academic, financial and social well-being of the college and to adult learning generally.

Skills and Experience Required

The successful applicant will demonstrate the following competencies and skills:

• Leadership - experience inspiring and influencing others, as well as experience in key areas such as strategic planning and risk management.

• Relationship building and community partnerships - experience making strong community connections with diverse stakeholder groups and experience building consensus and partnerships.

• Governance - experience on or with board structures and policy governance models, and/or current or previous board or committee experience.

Preferred applicant may also demonstrate:

• Experience in post-secondary education and/or the delivery of education;

• Experience in one or more of the following:

  • Financial management experience, including budgeting, public accounting, audit, investment management (designation considered an asset);
  • Human resource management, either as a manager or business partner. (designation considered an asset);
  • Trades and apprentice training, development and delivery and/or trades;
  • Capital project development and/or oversight.

Credential and experience verification may be conducted.

Remuneration and Time Commitment

The public member is appointed for a term of up to three years and may be eligible for re-appointment for a second term of up to three years. The Board meets at least seven times per year, in addition to committee meetings. The public member can expect a significant time commitment to meet the demands of this role. Remuneration in the form of an honorarium is set by the Board in accordance with applicable legislation and Article 10.2 if the Keyano College Board of Governors General Bylaws.

Current honorarium rates are as follows:

Chair: $4,510 per year

Vice Chair: $3,970 per year

Member: $2,710 per year.

Honoraria rates are subject to review.

Members are reimbursed for allowable expenses as per the Board’s Bylaws.

Meetings are generally held in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
