Role Required

The Minister of Advanced Education is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a public member of the Board of Governors of the University of Lethbridge.

About the Agency

The University of Lethbridge is a public, board-governed university operating as a Comprehensive Academic and Research Institution under the authority of the Post-secondary Learning Act. Founded on the principles of liberal education, the University of Lethbridge provides undergraduate and graduate programs in education, fine arts, health sciences, humanities, management, nursing, sciences, and social sciences, leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The institution also provides certificate programs, post-baccalaureate certificate programs, post-graduate certificate programs, post-masters certificate programs, programs and degrees that lead to professional specialization, and open studies for lifelong learners. Over 8,400 students attend the Lethbridge and Calgary campuses of the University of Lethbridge. The operating budget that the Board of Governors is responsible for is $168 million

Board and Committee Structure

The Board consists of nine public members and a chair appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, as well as nine members nominated or elected to represent various associations of the institution. The President and Chancellor are also members of the Board by virtue of their position. Committees established by the Board include: Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Audit Committee, Advancement Committee, Governance Committee and Compensation Committee.

Role Description

Role of the Public Member

The public member shares with other members of the Board the responsibilities:

  • of governing the University of Lethbridge;
  • formulating policies enabling the Board to make responsible decisions on fiscal and academic matters;
  • establishing the purpose and vision of the university;
  • and has a commitment to the academic, financial and social well-being of the university and to adult learning generally.
Skills and Experience Required

The successful applicants will demonstrate the following competencies and skills:

• Leadership - experience inspiring and influencing others, as well as experience in key areas such as strategic planning and risk management.

• Relationship building and community partnerships - experience making strong community connections with diverse stakeholder groups and experience building consensus and partnerships.

• Governance - experience on or with board structures and policy governance models, and/or current or previous board or committee experience.

Preferred applicants may also demonstrate:

• Experience in post-secondary education, and/or the education of adults;

• Background and experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Business development and/or business management in private or public sector;
  • Environmental sustainability, such as experience in water management, and/or land use;
  • Agricultural experience, through professional involvement or related experience;
  • Financial experience in the field of public accounting, as well as experience with investments. A professional designation considered an asset;
  • Related professional or volunteer work in arts and culture;
  • Legal expertise, including substantial experience as a practicing lawyer and in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta;
  • Advancement operations, fundraising and capital campaigns.

Experience within the region and the community of the university, specifically the Calgary area is also preferred.

Remuneration and Time Commitment

The public member is appointed for a term of up to three years and may be eligible for re-appointment for a second term of up to three years. The Board meets at least five times per year, in addition to committee meetings. The public member can expect a significant time commitment to meet the demands of this role. There is no honorarium is available with these opportunities. Members are reimbursed for allowable expenses as per the Board’s Bylaws.

Meetings of the board are primarily held in Lethbridge, Alberta.
