The Honourable Stephanie McLean, Minister of Service Alberta, is seeking applications from Albertans interested in serving as the ministerial appointee to the Debtors’ Assistance Board and the Money Mentors Board of Directors.

Location
The Board office is located in Calgary. Board meetings occur in Calgary and by teleconference.
About the Agency

Money Mentors was incorporated in December 1996 and commenced operations in May 1997.

Money Mentors administers the Orderly Payment of Debts Program under Part 10 of the Federal Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act in Alberta on behalf of the Debtors’ Assistance Board.

Money Mentors is mandated to provide financial literacy materials and education to Albertans.

The Board composition includes representatives from the credit industry, insolvency professionals, educational institutions, and the public.

Role Description

As a ministerial appointee, the successful candidate will work as part of a team to represent the public interest to further the success of the Board and contribute to the overall leadership and strategic direction of the organization.

Board members contribute to:

  • establish the policies that guide the Board to fulfill its mandate;
  • participate in the development of the business plan, goals, and priorities of the Debtors’ Assistance Board and Money Mentors;
  • oversee the governance of the Debtors’ Assistance Board and Money Mentors and the job performance of the Executive Director of Money Mentors; and
  • approve the Board’s budget to ensure financial resources are allocated in a manner consistent with the board’s business plan, goals and priorities.

The public member is appointed for a term of up to three years and may be eligible for reappointment for a second term of up to three years.

Service Alberta recognizes the importance of reflecting the diversity of Alberta in the composition of boards and welcomes candidates with varied backgrounds, careers, and community leadership experience. If needed, training can be made available to support the successful candidate’s development.

Skills and Experience Required

Experience with one or more of the following will be considered an asset but are not required:

  • A background in community service.
  • Strategic thinking/planning. o Verbal and written communication.
  • Teamwork skills.

An interest or awareness of personal finances, financial literacy, or financial empowerment is desirable.

Experience with the credit industry or financial management is also desirable but not necessary, as is a related professional accreditation.

To be eligible for appointment a candidate must:

  • be a resident of Alberta; and
  • must not be a member of the credit granting industry.
Remuneration and Time Commitment

Members of the Debtors’ Assistance Board and the Money Mentors Board of Directors Board receive compensation for approved direct expenses related to Board business.

The Debtors’ Assistance Board typically meets once annually and the Money Mentors Board of Directors meets three to four times annually.
