As a member of the committee you will have the opportunity to help broaden Alberta’s access to advances in modern medicine while providing senior government leadership with sound advice and counsel.
The Expert Committee on Drug Evaluation and Therapeutics is the Minister of Health's external expert drug advisory committee. The Committee provides advice and recommendations to the Minister respecting the therapeutic value and cost effectiveness of drug products. The committee is an advisory agency for the Minister of Health, established under section 7 of the Government Organization Act.
This role is a perfect opportunity to use your analytical skills and health care experiences to make crucial recommendations to the Minister of Health that affect the lives of all Albertans. Such an opportunity is especially valuable for pharmacists with a keen interest and knowledge of drug products who are passionate to help make potentially life saving updates to the Alberta Health Drug Benefit List (ADBL).
This committee also provides a distinct opening to become a part of a highly specialized team and gain significant professional and personal development.
In order to fulfil the advisory duties, this commitment involves extensive review of the ADBL.
Committee members are appointed by the Minister of Health for a specified term length of no more than three years.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and are required to have expertise in evaluating the therapeutic value and cost-effectiveness of drug products and expertise in one or more of the following fields: pharmacy, pharmacology, clinical pharmacology, pharmaco-economics, pharmaco-kinetics, trial design and/or epidemiology.
Applicants that are clinical pharmacists or have experience working in a community or hospital pharmacy setting will be considered an asset.

The following will not be considered for appointment as committee members:
- Government of Alberta employees; and
- Individuals whose appointment would result in an actual or perceived conflict of interest
Competencies:
- Superior verbal and written communication skills;
- Well-developed analytical and critical thinking skills;
- Ability to concisely synthesize information from various sources;
- Ability to exercise objectivity, sound judgment, and diligence; and
- Ability to understand and apply legislation.
Short listed applicants will be required to undergo a criminal record check.

This is not a salaried position. Currently, committee members may receive remuneration for time spent on committee business:
Members of the committee are paid remuneration in accordance with Schedule 1, Part A of the Committee Remuneration Order as per Ministerial Order 310/2016. The rates are:
- $164 for up to and including four hours in one day, or
- $290 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in one day, or
- $427 for over eight hours in one day.
Remuneration for the chair or a person acting as the chair is:
- $219 for up to and including four hours in any day, or
- $383 for over four hours and up to and including eight hours in any day, or
- $601 for over eight hours in any day, spent on the business of the committee.
All members may also receive reasonable living and travelling expenses necessarily incurred in the course of performing their duties as members in accordance with the Public Service Relocation and Employment Expenses Regulation and the Government of Alberta’s Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expense Policy.
Meetings of the committee will be held as required, but generally at least six times a year for one or two full days in Edmonton.
Significant preparation time is required prior to each meeting.
