The Premier is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as a  council member of the Alberta Order of Excellence Council .

Location
The Council meets twice a year in Edmonton. There may be a third meeting in an alternate location in Alberta on occasion.
About the Agency

The Alberta Order of Excellence (AOE) is the highest honour the Province of Alberta can bestow on a citizen. Members of the Alberta Order of Excellence careers range from medicine, science, engineering, law, and business to politics, education, agriculture and the arts. The one thing all members have in common is that they have made an outstanding provincial, national, or international impact. 

The Alberta Order of Excellence Council (the Council) is an advisory agency that is accountable to the Premier and responsible for providing advice and guidance regarding the awarding of the Alberta Order of Excellence. 

The primary role of the Council is to consider the nominations of candidates to the Alberta Order of Excellence.

Role Description

Council members are appointed through Order in Council for a 3-year term. Members carry out duties to ensure the Order meets its objectives, including:

  • reviewing nominations;
  • recommending persons to be granted membership in the Order to the Chancellor;
  • advising the Chancellor on matters concerning the Order; and
  • promoting the Alberta Order of Excellence.
Skills and Experience Required

Council members are recognized and respected for a significant record of accomplishment in their careers, community, volunteer and professional experience. Ideal backgrounds include:

  • Experience working effectively in a team environment;
  • Demonstrates fairness, objectivity, and integrity while exercising sound judgment;
  • Supports consensus decision making;
  • Excellent communication skills, complemented by strong analytic skills are essential;
  • Experience as a member of a board, council or similar body is a definite asset.

To complement current competencies on the Council, preference will be given to candidates with an understanding of, or background in,  agriculture, science, technology or post-secondary sectors. Preference will also be given to candidates from rural Alberta.

Remuneration and Time Commitment

Expenses for travel to meetings may be reimbursed as per Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Policy. No additional remuneration is provided.

Candidates must be able to commit to attending the Investiture Ceremony and the Council’s meetings. The AOE Council meets 2 to 3 times annually; once in the spring to make the selection of inductees and once in the autumn for the investiture ceremony and council meeting. Both these meetings are held in Edmonton. Additional meetings are determined by the Council and may be held in other locations in the Province. Prior to the spring Council meeting, Council members are required to review all nominations and prepare their short list of candidates
