The ATRF Board is an independent corporation governed by the Teachers’ Pension Plans Act. The ATRF is the trustee and administrator of the Teachers’ Pension Plan and the Private School Teachers’ Pension Plan, and is custodian of their assets. The two plans cover 92 employers and over 78,500 members. Fund assets under administration are approximately $12 billion and are expected to double in the next 10 years.
The ATRF Board is responsible for the governance of the ATRF, as well as establishing fiscal, investment and administrative policies that support high performance in a complex and dynamic environment. As a Board member, you will play a stewardship role in governing the management and business affairs of the corporation. Appointments are made by Order in Council for a term normally of up to four years.
The ideal candidate will have extensive related senior management experience with particular expertise in the areas of investment, enterprise risk management, or pension design and funding. The candidate's background includes previous roles related to boards, committees and governance. Exceptional communication skills and an ability to understand diverse viewpoints and build consensus are key for success. Final candidates will be required to undergo a security screening.
The ATRF Board members are appointed by Order in Council, normally for a term of up to four years. Board members attend seven board meetings and approximately six committee meetings per year, in Edmonton. Remuneration includes an annual retainer and meeting honorarium for those members that are not employed by the Crown, Alberta Teachers’ Association or a participating employer.
For the 2014 – 2015 fiscal year the annual retainer was $19,000, with board meeting fees of $1,200. Committee meeting fees were $800 or $1,200, depending on whether the meeting was longer than four hours. Separate fees are not paid for committee meetings held the same day as board meetings. Board compensation is reviewed annually and based on a survey of remuneration at similar Canadian public sector pension investment and administration organizations. Travel expenses for attendance at Board meetings are reimbursed as per Government of Alberta regulations.
