Role Required

• The Minister of Culture and Tourism is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as public members, chair and vice-chair of Travel Alberta.

Location
• Face-to-face meetings typically occur in Calgary as well as various locations around the province. Typically in person meetings are combined with committee meetings as well as the full board meeting.
About the Agency

• Travel Alberta was established in 2009 as a Crown corporation and the provincial tourism marketing agency of the Government of Alberta. The purposes of the Corporation, as stipulated in the Travel Alberta Act, are:

  • o to market the tourism assets, attractions and opportunities present in Alberta in domestic, national and international markets;
  • o to promote Alberta as a destination for tourists and other visitors;
  • o to assist Alberta's tourism industry operators to market their products; and
  • o to exercise or perform any other powers, duties and functions as authorized.

• Travel Alberta is the provincial marketing agency of the Government of Alberta governed by a Board of Directors that oversees Travel Alberta ("the Corporation") to ensure the effective achievement of its objectives and mandate.

• On behalf of the Minister and industry stakeholders, the Travel Alberta Board is responsible for tourism marketing decisions in support of Alberta tourism industry. The Board oversees Travel Alberta strategic plans as well as all financial/audit requirements.

• Travel Alberta is accountable and reports to the Minister of Culture and Tourism who is accountable to the Legislature for Travel Alberta.

Role Description

• Directors’ duties and accountabilities (includes Chair and Vice Chair roles) include:

  • Being knowledgeable of the Board's mandate and the tourism industry.
  • Consider the interests of the Province and work with the Government in implementing and actioning priorities and policies as it relates to Travel Alberta's mandate.
  • Demonstrate skill, diligence and care in effectively and prudently utilizing internal and external resources to achieve Travel Alberta's organizational mandate and goals.
  • Providing leadership and good governance for Travel Alberta.
  • Specific duties include:

                    -Demonstrating high ethical standards and integrity including                     recognizing and acknowledging any real or potential conflicts                     of interests;

                     -Attending Board meetings and serving on committees; ?

                    -Engaging actively in Board discussion and decision-                     making using sound judgement and proactive                           problem solving to deal with board opportunities and                      challenges; ?

                    -Participating in the development of Travel Alberta's annual                        Business Plan and approving the annual budget; ?

                   -Reviewing and voting on policy and other matters including                     reviewing and revising as necessary the mandate and policies                     of Travel Alberta; ?

                   -Complying with the government's financial,                     administrative and internal control policies as well as meeting                     all reporting requirements of the Minister; and ?

                    -Acting as an ambassador/representative for Travel Alberta                     and working to enhance relations between the tourism                     industry, tourism operators and tourism stakeholders and                     Travel Alberta.

• In addition to the duties of a Director, the Board Chair duties and accountabilities include:

  • Being the principal contact between the Board and the Minister representing the Board in working in collaboration and cooperation, with and at the direction of the Minister;
  • Keeping the Minister apprised of Travel Alberta issues or events and ensuring the Minister is provided with timely, relevant, accurate and complete information and reporting;
  • Developing and maintaining successful relationships and partnerships with the tourism industry, stakeholders and the department for the benefit of the Board and Travel Alberta;
  • Calling and presiding at all meetings of the Board, being an ex-officio member of all committees and, has the power to establish committees and appoint members to such committees;
  • Demonstrating the strong leadership skills required to ensure that the board is effective in achieving the goals, strategy, policy and directions of the Minister and the Board mandate;
  • Along with the Board, provides direction to the Chief Executive Officer on the strategy, goals and outcomes of Travel Alberta;
  • Ensuring that policy strategy, plans and activities are appropriately represented to the Board and other stakeholders; and
  • Ensuring that the Board is alert to its obligations to stakeholders the department and government.

• Vice Chair duties and accountabilities are to support the Chair in fulfilling his/her duties including chairing meetings and acts as Chair during absences of the Chair.

• Directors’ terms are generally for three years.

Skills and Experience Required

• Skills and experience required for all Director roles (including Chair and Vice Chair) include:

  • Leadership, teamwork, strategic thinking, planning, critical thinking, relationship building, strong communication and problem solving skills;
  • Board Member or board training experience that includes one or more boards for community, industry, non-profits and/or corporate boards; and
  • Understanding Travel Alberta's mandate and can participate in the board's deliberations and decisions in matters of policy, finance and programs.

• Skills and experiences that are assets for all Director applicants include:

  • Background of involvement in marketing, communications, business or finance, particularly in the tourism industry;
  • Previous board experience including board training and/or audit committee experience;
  • Hospitality / Tourism industry experience;
  • Government Relations experience; o Human Resources, Information Technology, or Legal experience; and/or
  • Indigenous, Multicultural, Youth, Non-profit and Volunteer experience.

• Skills and experiences required for the Chair include:

  • Strong leadership, consensus building and communications skills to ensure the Travel Alberta board is effective and efficient in achieving their stated goals and mandate.
  • Senior leadership and Board governance experience with proven success as a leader and in achieving results.

• Skills, abilities and experiences required for the Vice Chair are the same as the Chair role.
