The Minister of Culture and Tourism is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as public members, Chair and Vice Chair of the Alberta Sport Connection.
The Alberta Sport Connection is an agency of the Government of Alberta, dedicated to the development of sport, from grassroots to high-performance. A provincial corporation, our mission is to enhance, advocate and inspire participation and partnerships as Albertans strive for excellence in sport. Our vision is for Alberta to be the premier sport delivery system in Canada.
Alberta Sport Connection is accountable and reports to the Minister of Culture and Tourism who is accountable to the Legislature for the Alberta Sport Connection.
The Alberta Sport Connection’s mandate is to develop and maintain sport programs, facilities and services; and to raise funds to be used in assisting the corporation in the carrying out of its objects.
Board Member duties and accountabilities (includes Chair and Vice Chair roles) include:
- Approve, if appropriate, operational policy and other recommendations received from the Board, its standing and ad hoc committees, and senior staff;
- Hear and participate in decisions on operational policy-based grant issues;
- Be familiar with and understand Board policies;
- Review the bylaws, ASC budget and Business Plan and recommend changes, where necessary;
- Review and approve grants for provincial sport programs to volunteer-driven provincial, regional and community sport partners;
- Select host communities for multi-sport games;
- Oversight and operational policy direction of provincial programs related to Alberta Games and Marketing, Sport Development and High-Performance Sport;
- Participate in an annual Board Assessment survey;
- Assist in developing and maintaining positive and productive relations among the Board and its committees;
- Follow Board policy at all times when in contact with community and staff.
In addition to the duties of a Board Member, the Board Chair duties and accountabilities include:
- Is an ex-officio member of all committees;
- Has the power to establish committees and appoint members to such committees;
- Act as the principal interface with the CEO;
- Ensure regular communication with the Minister regarding major ASC activities;
- In conjunction with the CEO, ensure that operational policy, strategy, plans and activities are appropriately represented to the Board and other stakeholders;
- Ensure that the Board remains alert to its obligations to the government, ministry and other stakeholders;
- Provide strong leadership of the Board in reviewing and monitoring the goals, strategy, operational policy and directions of the Board and the achievement of its objectives;
- Ensure that the Board fulfills all the obligations set out in the Board Mandate.
Vice Chair duties and accountabilities are to support the Chair in fulfilling his/her duties including chairing meetings and acts as Chair during absences of the Chair.
Appointment of each Board Member (including Chair and Vice Chair) is for a fixed term of up to three years to a maximum of 10 years of service.
Skills and experience required for all Board Member roles (including Chair and Vice Chair) include:
- Leadership, teamwork, strategic thinking, planning, critical thinking, relationship building, strong communication and problem-solving skills;
- Board Member or board training experience that includes one or more boards for community, industry, non-profits and/or corporate boards; and
- Understanding Alberta Sport Connection’s mandate and can participate in the board's deliberations and decisions in matters of operational policy, finance and programs.
Skills and experiences that are assets for all Board Member applicants include:
- Background of involvement in marketing, communications, business or finance;
- Previous board experience including board training and/or audit committee experience;
- Government relations experience;
- Human resources, information technology, or legal experience; and/or
- Candidates from varied backgrounds, careers, and community leadership.
Skills and experiences required for the Chair include:
- Strong leadership, consensus building and communications skills to ensure the Alberta Sport Connection board is effective and efficient in achieving their stated goals and mandate.
- Senior leadership and Board governance experience with proven success as a leader and in achieving results.
Skills, abilities and experiences required for the Vice Chair are the same as the Chair role.
Note: Board Member compensation is currently under review.
Board Members are remunerated through Schedule 1, Part A Committee Remuneration Order (OC 466/2007).
ASC Board typically meets four times a year, conducts additional conference calls and committee meetings, as required.On average, the yearly time commitment for a Board Member is 12 days (approximately 40 hours). On average, the yearly time commitment for the Chair is 16 days (approximately 55 hours). Face-to-face meetings take place throughout Alberta and usually in communities hosting the Alberta Games.
Board Members required to travel on Board business are remunerated according to the most recent Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expense Directive.
