The Minister of Labour is seeking applications from individuals interested in serving as Chair of Alberta Labour Relations Board.
Within the Ministry of Labour, the Alberta Labour Relations Board (the Board) is an independent, quasi judicial body, expert in the field of labour relations. The Board adjudicates disputes under the Labour Relations Code, the Public Service Employee Relations Act, and the Police Officers’ Collective Bargaining Act. The Board processes applications, holds hearings, actively encourages dispute resolution and employs officers for investigations.
In this leadership role, you will lead an adjudicative board in the impartial and consistent application and interpretation of Alberta's labour laws. You are responsible for the development, administration and interpretation of policies and processes related to labour relations in Alberta. Providing strategic leadership to the Board and achieving measurable outcomes within the parameters of the Board’s legal framework, mandate and mission will ensure your success. Serving as the Chief Executive Officer of the board you are responsible for the oversight of both members and staff and ensuring the Board functions as an impartial and independent tribunal operating in a timely and consistent manner.
Exercising an in-depth understanding of employment legislation, collective bargaining, and labour history, you will act independently in dealing with applications, while maintaining consistency with Board policies and procedures. As part of this role, you will provide leadership on projects and administrative matters and represent the Board in public relations functions.
Your background includes extensive experience practicing in the field of labour relations preferably as an arbitrator or nominee. You have knowledge in quasi judicial processes and can ensure the fair, impartial and efficient resolution of applications and matters under the applicable legisation. You are respected by both the labour and management stakeholders within the labour relations community, have demonstrated skills in consensus building and mediation as well as possess the ability to articulate decisions in a timely manner. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. A Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor Degree with a focus of practice in labour and administrative law is required.
This full time Senior Official position is based in Edmonton and offers an annual salary range of $156,257 - $217,589 per annum as prescribed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council in O.C. 1/2016, Appendix 1, Schedule 2, effective April 1, 2015.
