Hoekstra, David

Mr. David Hoekstra is the General Manager of Marble Farms and a Director with the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association. He is a former Director with the Canadian Horticultural Council - Conseil Canadien de L'Horticulture. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Politics, History, and Economics from The King's University College, and a Certificate in Leadership and Applied Public Affairs from Trinity Western University.

Each member of the board also contributes to the board’s full range of skills and expertise, including at least one of the following areas: financial, human resources, legal, risk management, and/or strategic planning. Mr. Hoekstra was appointed on the basis of meeting the competencies, skills, and attributes as described above

Stauth, Brian

Mr. Brian Stauth is the Director of Fire and Emergency Services with the City of Medicine Hat. He has held several leadership roles with the city prior to his current position, and has experience in the trades, rural business, and agriculture equipment industry. Mr. Stauth is a Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician and Journeyman Parts Person, as well as has pursued a Bachelor of Applied Business – Emergency Services through Lakeland College.

Each member of the board also contributes to the board’s full range of skills and expertise, including at least one of the following areas: financial, human resources, legal, risk management, and/or strategic planning. Mr. Stauth was appointed on the basis of meeting the competencies, skills, and attributes as described above.

Krasnuik, Russel

Mr. Russell Krasnuik is a faculty member at Medicine Hat College with a background in kinesiology, ecotourism and outdoor leadership. He currently serves as a member of Medicine Hat College’s General Academic Council and as an advisory committee member for a national Affordable Housing Consortium, International Ecotourism Society, and Sunrise Rotary. He holds a Master of Arts in Leadership degree from Royal Roads University, a Master of Education (General) degree from the University of Lethbridge, a Master of Physical Education degree from California State University, a Bachelor of Physical Education degree from the University of Calgary, and an Instructor Diploma Program (IDP) from Vancouver City College.

MacKenzie, Sarah

Ms. Sarah MacKenzie has been on the board since October 2019, and has been the acting Chair since January 2021. She is a Partner with The Home Team of Royal LePage. She serves as President of the Medicine Hat and District Chamber of Commerce, and is the Interim Chair of Invest Medicine Hat Advisory Group. Ms. MacKenzie has served on several other community committees, including MedHat Movember, Sunrise Rotary Club, and the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council.

Beck, Shelley

Ms. Shelley Beck was directly appointed in April 2020 and serves as Chair of the Governance Committee and as a member on the Finance and Audit Committee. She is a retired educator, having taught Excel Training Seminars for Professional Development while she was a Senior Associate with K2 Enterprises Canada. She also taught at Medicine Hat College for 16 years. She holds a Bachelor of Education degree (with Distinction) from the University of Lethbridge.

Ms. Beck was directly appointed based on meeting the competencies, skills, and attributes as described above.

Mohammed, Yusuf

Mr. Yusuf Mohammed was directly appointed in April 2020 and serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Governors and Chair of the External Relations Committee. He is the owner/operator of Lantern Glo Co & Our Village Creative. He is also the founder of the Connection Intercultural Association of Medicine Hat, member on the Medicine Hat Local Immigration Partnership Executive Council, and former Chair of the City of Medicine Hat Social Development Board. Mr. Mohammed holds a Master of Global Management, a Graduate Certificate in Intercultural Communication & Leadership, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Professional Communication from Royal Roads University.

Smith, Kent

Mr. Kent Smith was directly appointed in April 2020 and serves as Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee. He is the President of The Smith Group and Estate Planning Inc. Mr. Smith is currently a director with the Hockey Alberta Foundation Board and is an active community volunteer in the Medicine Hat community. He holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Economics degrees from St. Andrews University and is a Charter Life Underwriter.

Asare, Ebenezer

Mr. Ebenezer Asare is a pharmacist and owner of two Shoppers Drug Mart locations, one in Brooks and one in Medicine Hat. He is a former instructor from Bredin Centre for Learning, where he instructed foreign-trained pharmacists. He holds a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana and completed the International Pharmacy Bridging Program at Bredin Institute. He is currently enrolled in the University of Calgary Executive MBA program.

Kovalev, Nikita

Mr. Nikita Kovalev is a third-year University Transfer student at Medicine Hat College. He is Vice-President External with the Students’ Association of Medicine Hat College for the 2023/24 academic year. Mr. Kovalev works as a Research Assistant for Medicine Hat College, as a Pharmacy Assistant at Hill Pharmacy, and is also a Supervisor at Canalta Food Services Ltd.

Schaerer, Lily

Ms. Lily Schaerer is the President of the Students’ Association of Medicine Hat College. She served as Vice-President Internal for the Students’ Association of Medicine Hat College for the 2022/23 academic year. Ms. Schaerer completed her Business Administration-Management major diploma in 2023 and is currently working toward her Bachelor of Management degree. She is the recipient of the Student Leader of the Year award in April 2023 and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. 

West, Lana

Ms. Lana West is an Administrative Assistant in the Registrars’ Office at Medicine Hat College. She served as the AUPE Vice-Chair from 2013-15 and the AUPE Chapter Chair from 2015-23.
